Job Summary

BeyondBeach are looking for an outgoing individual who enjoys people management and has a passion for teaching people to sail. The Yacht Senior will work as a hands on Yacht Trainer whilst also taking on additional duties and responsibilities to support their manager. To apply for this role you must already be a confident, capable and experienced Yacht Trainer with at least 2 seasons experience in the industry. 

As one of the yacht trainers, in a small 3 or 4 person team, you will work hands-on teaching guests each week. Guests will often have little or no experience of sailing and it is your role to teach them how to stay safe afloat and how to enjoy sailing. In addition to teaching, a Yacht Trainer must carry out a number of other duties such as: safety checks, paperwork, welcome briefings, cleaning the yacht apartment and assisting with changeover day duties. As the Senior Yacht Trainer you will be responsible for supporting the other trainers (be they part time or full time workers) in achieving their goals and in delivering the product to the highest standard possible. Your role is to ensure they succeed in their role. You will teach new staff how to run the training program to our standards of safety, tuition and enjoyment. You will teach them how to deal with challenging situations and how to ensure their boat is always in a safe working order before setting sail.

You will have a natural ability to deliver exceptional customer service whilst being professional yet friendly at all times. The key thing with all our holiday experiences is to ensure that the guests are having fun and staying safe. Your role as Senior Yacht Trainer is to train your team and offer ongoing support to ensure that their standards of safety and customer service are exceptional at all times. In the event of any guest complaints you will be the first person to deal with these, before they are escalated to the yacht manager. 

You must have a thorough understanding of the BeyondBeach Operations Manual, the IYT teaching syllabus and the holiday package. You need to adhere to the guidelines and the syllabus at all times, ensuring your team does the same. 

You must be fully aware of weather conditions, guest abilities and equipment issues for the whole program. You will need to be confident making decisions to ensure that daily plans are suitable and adapted when needed. You will be the first port of call for other staff if they have problems or queries or emergency scenarios. You will be the first port of call for guests if they have problems or queries. You will need to develop an understanding of when to resolve these issues alone and when to seek help from the yacht manager.

You will have a list of weekly tasks that fall to you. Such as: boat checks, H&S audits, stock checks, preparing welcome packs, laundry supervision, boat cleaning, maintenance reports, exam marking, certificate applications. You will be trained to take charge of the guest arrival day including: guest calls, boat preparations, guest welcome duties, welcome packs, boat papers etc. The Yacht Manager will not be present on changeover day. You will also organise and attend any and all evening guest activities, including Welcome Meal, Coffee and Questions and any others that are to be organised throughout the guests week.

As a senior member of staff, at busy times or in challenging circumstances you must be willing to work as and when needed. For example the guests may need extra support in the evenings or the boats may need to be moved during late night storms. You will need to recognise that the increased salary that comes with this role is a reflection of this willingness to work extra hours from time to time and to take on extra responsibilities.

Job Requirements

  • RYA Coastal Skipper 
  • RYA Yacht Master 
  • IYT Trainer
  • RYA Powerboat Level 2 
  • RYA Powerboat ICC (desirable) An ICC is available from the RYA if you have your level 2
  • VHF License (desirable)
  • Valid First Aid certificate
  • Yacht or Keelboat teaching experience 
  • Basic yacht maintenance experience
  • Confident problem solver, capable of applying logic and initiative to decision making
  • Able to work under pressure and communicate effectively in challenging situations and in emergency situations
  • Excellent customer service experience
  • Skilled in safety and on the water rescue techniques
  • Competent Swimmer
  • Clean DBS check
  • Over 20 years of age
  • Valid Driving License
  • Clean and tidy appearance
