Arrival Day

  • Transfer time from the airport to our yacht base is about 50 mins. Our yachts are ready for boarding at approx. 3pm on your arrival day. You’ll be met by our local staff on the pontoon. After a short briefing about living on board, safety and the local town we leave you to relax and sort your things out. You have the option of going to the local beach, a nearby swimming pool or just relaxing on the boat. The actual sailing starts the following day at 9am.

During the week

  • Your skipper is onboard for the duration for that peace of mind, but they do hop off every evening so you have your privacy. We start at about 9am and mornings are generally spent in the harbour having a go at leaving the mooring and returning safely, and more importantly confidently in a variety of different situations. Picking up a buoy and coming alongside.
  • We then set off under sail to find spots for lunch, normally a picnic on anchor at a secluded beach or stunning bay. Plenty of time for swimming and snorkelling and we try anchoring too. The afternoon is spent practicing sailing techniques under the guidance of your skipper as the breeze generally picks up nicely. We usually return to our base at approx. 3-4pm.  A quick de-brief of the day and chat through some sailing theory including basic engine checks, rope work and emergency equipment for attracting attention including VHF skills (mayday). Then it’s time for a well deserved beer,  a swim at the beach or just flop by the pool at our nearby beach club.
  • We explore numerous bays and beaches throughout the week in and around the wonderful gulf of Argostoli, and you’ll get the chance to spend some nights (weather permitting) on anchor to really enjoy those incredible Greek stars and experience that wonderful feeling of adventure!

Bavaria 32 yacht moored in harbour

  • The yachts need to be vacated at 10 am (no later) so we can prepare them for the next arrivals at 3pm!! We’ll arrange transfers for those heading home and those setting off for a 2nd weeks sailing or at the beach club.

The local area

About the local area

Kefalonia is one of a group of islands on the western side of Greece in the Ionian Sea. It is the largest of the Ionian islands and boasts the third-highest mountain range in Greece. Parts of the island are now national parks, home to wild horses, golden eagles and other protected flora and fauna.

Experience the Sailing… and the food!

No holiday to Greece is complete without the mouth-watering food available! In the many cafes, restaurants and tavernas in the local area, you can enjoy classic Greek kitchen dishes, seasonal salads, mind-blowing tomatoes and freshly grilled sardines, pork chops and club sandwiches. All very reasonably priced too!

Did you know that there are 48 varieties of grape grown locally in Kefalonia? You can also enjoy some very fine internationally recognised wines to try, along with some fantastic Hellenic beers, there’s plenty to enjoy.

For our Introduction to Sailing holidays, no meals are included in the holiday price.

Just moments from our marina base In Lixouri you’ll find everything you need for a week of sailing including mini-marts, a supermarket, some fantastic local bakeries and numerous local cafes and restaurants! We have some suggestions for you to try on your holiday!

Why not wander along to the town square and grab a fresh coffee and a pastry before you set sail? The bakery at the back of the square is our favourite!

On your sailing days, pick up some provisions for an onboard picnic. You’ll find deli meats and cheese available locally as well as freshly made bread from the bakery too, or just head for the supermarket where you’ll find all the above under one roof. Don’t forget, you’ll need to provide lunch for your skipper on the days they are onboard with you.

On your chartwork and theory refresh day (normally day 4), you can purchase lunch at the beach club taverna should you wish to. A full lunch menu is available from 12.30pm – 3pm. There is a wide selection of dishes on our menu from healthy salads to club sandwiches and light bites plus daily specials. Vegetarian and Vegan options are available too.

Post sailing snack

Crisps, chocolate and ice cream are available from street vendors and local shops, or for our top pick stop by I-Scream Ice cream parlour on the left-hand side of the town square – you won’t be disappointed!

Evening meals in Lixouri

With the town square and main seafront pretty much on the doorstep, there are many, many options to choose from. There are a number of options along the seafront, around the town square as well as through the back streets.

Instead of a sit-down meal, you can always pick up a gyros and take it back to your yacht. Pizza Paradiso serves up fantastic takeaway pizza too.

If you don’t fancy heading out for the evening, there are cooking facilities on board your yacht should you wish to enjoy a meal on board.

Exploring meal options further afield, you can enjoy a sunset meal at one of the best beaches in Kefalonia: Petani beach and taverna  “Erasmia“. Only a 20 – 25 minute taxi ride from Lixouri this place is incredible – get there early for a swim and settle down for a wonderful eating experience.

Drop us a line if you can’t find your answer…

Do I have to complete the online assessment before doing the course in Kefalonia?

If you intend to come away with an ICC it is essential you register with the IYT and complete the online learning pre-holiday.

It takes approximately 10 hours to complete the theory which can be completed in sections (we recommend 5 sessions of 2 hours each).

Are there any other assessments on the holiday?

Yes, there is a multiple-choice test that must be taken and passed if you intend to gain your ICC.

What is it like living on-board?

It’s like a floating caravan with similar self-catering mod cons. There are 3 separate cabins, hot and cold water, hob cooker and toilet/shower (don’t expect a Swiss Spa). We do provide toilet/shower facilities ashore for your comfort. These are shared with the other guests taking part on the Learn to Sail course.

Do we share the boat with anyone else?

No, you have your own boat to yourselves  – this is our policy.  You will have your own exclusive skipper who does not live on board with you either. They hop off the boat at the end of the day, for your own privacy.

If you are on a singles holiday and have requested to live onboard – you may be sharing the boat (but not a cabin) with another person.

The shore facilities at the marina are shared

Do you have to be as ‘strong as an ox’ to sail a yacht?

No. As long as you have basic mobility and average strength then you’ll be fine. We’ve had a few septuagenarians out before who have had a fabulous time!

We have children. Will there be enough for them to do?

In school holiday periods we have lots of families with children of all ages on our holidays. It’s a great atmosphere on and off the water and the children love it, plus they learn something new. We focus the course on you as a family group, giving all the children jobs but we are flexible as we understand it is a holiday after all. We keep the days fairly short (10 – 4.30 ish) and always have a good hour and a half for swimming at lunch on anchor.

How old do you have to be to do the ICC / Crew certificate?

You must be 16 years old or over in order to complete your ICC.

You must be 14 years old or over in order to complete you Competent Crew Certificate

There are absolutely no exceptions to these rules!

Do all the crew have to do ICC?

No – Only those of you that would like to obtain their qualifications. Otherwise, you can sit back and enjoy the view

I can’t swim

Do not panic our skippers are fully qualified and very very safety conscious! They will look after you, but we highly recommend you wear a buoyancy aid/life jacket whilst on board your yacht.
