About our walking holidays in Kefalonia, Greece

Our guided walking holidays in Greece, from the dramatic island of Kefalonia, offer some of the most dramatic scenery in the region. From the National Park of Mount Ainos at 1628m (higher than Ben Nevis), which dominates the island with its presence, to the compelling beauty of the wild countryside, fertile valleys and wild varieties of orchid.

Walking really is the perfect way to discover these beautiful locations and we’ll share our knowledge of the local area, flora and fauna. Our guides are all locals who live and walk these islands throughout the changing seasons, so you can be sure of a friendly and knowledgeable companion throughout the holiday.

We keep our guided groups small, between 8 and 14 walkers, so we can be flexible en- route and really give you an insight into this stunning and historic Greek island.

Life in Lixouri, the friendly little town only 4km south along the coast from your accommodation, the Lazaratos Hotel, revolves around the main square, where you’ll find local tavernas, bars and lively pavement cafés – and our great little yacht marina.

Who is it for ?

We welcome individuals, friends and couples of all ages on our walking holidays.

The pace of the holiday is relaxed and there is plenty of free time for re-charging and exploring. The walks vary between 4 to 6 hrs with stops for lunch and swimming. Although not hard going some of the terrains are uphill (short and steep climbs), so a reasonable level of fitness is required.

There is always a great mix of different people. The maximum number in a walking group is usually about 8-12 which we believe ensures that everyone can easily get to know one another and also does not intrude on the environment that we will explore.

Our walking itinerary is unique to us and will take you all over the island, providing you with a variety of locations and dramatic scenery. On most days you will be taken to and from the walking destinations in a mini bus or private taxi.  The pace of the holiday is relaxed and there is plenty of free time for re-charging and exploring.

Itinerary

We provide 5 guided walks. There are many wonderful beaches on Kefalonia, and we always try to finish the day with a well-deserved swim, followed by a cold drink and ice-cream. A mix of olive groves and Cyprus trees, secluded bays, beautiful beaches and mountains that drop vertically into the clear blue sea,  all combine to make Kefalonia’s island landscape very dramatic.

There are a number of walks around the island that we think really allow you to discover this magical island.

FAQs

If you can’t find an answer then please ask…

Do I need walking boots and sticks?

You should wear any pair of well worn comfortable shoes, however they do not need to be boots –  a good pair of walking trainers with a sturdy sole are perfectly fine. Most guests do bring one stick and it is a good idea, as some of the terrain is loose under foot, and there are a few short/sharp up/downhill climbs.

How long are the walks each day?

We usually walk for about 4 to 5 hours in total per day. We always have a few breaks, lunch and a swim on top of the walking time. The days normally start around 9.30 am and finish between 4 and 6 pm.

Do we have any free days?

Yes.  We always have a free day in the middle of the week where you can visit various places or just relax by the pool and give the legs a rest!

What meals are included?

Inclusive meals include breakfast every day, 4 evening meals and a packed lunch on the days you are walking. Evening meals are served on Thursday (arrival evening) Friday, Monday and Wednesday (last evening). On the evenings where meals are not included, dinner is available at the club taverna. There are also various restaurants and tavernas in Lixouri Town and the local area. As the walking week is a small group of guests, non inclusive meals tend to be enjoyed together at a local taverna, however guests should not feel obliged to do so.

How do we get to the walks each day?

We arrange a minibus or taxi’s to pick up from the hotel accommodation and take us to wherever the start of the walk may be on that day.  We are then picked up at the finishing point.  Usually, you can leave your swimming stuff in the vehicle so that you do not need to carry it with you in the day. The transport for the guided walking days is included in the holiday price.

What mix of people do you get on the walking holidays?

We get a very broad mix of people ranging from singles in their 30’s to couples in their 70’s. Some belong to rambling clubs and often walk, while others have never been on any organised walks before but just fancy a holiday where they get to meet others and do something active. We keep the group sizes to a maximum of 12 persons, (unless it is a group booking in which case we can take larger numbers).

What do we have for lunch on the walking days?

A packed lunch is provided on the days that you have a guided walk.  Either freshly baked rolls made from a selection of fillings, a salad or a pie.  Along with either crisps or chocolate, a piece of fruit, and a juice  and small water.  You choose your lunch the evening before, but all the sandwiches are made fresh in the morning.

Most guests bring along a water bottle of a ‘camelpak’ type water carrying bag, as you need lots of water!

Info on the flora and local history of the island?

As we live here we have an in-depth knowledge of this beautiful island and it’s fascinating history. All our guides love the island and its flora and always share their knowledge with our guests.

Do we go out as group to eat in the evenings?

On some evenings we arrange to meet up for meals at various tavernas if you fancy it. If you don’t, then just enjoy your own time and explore some great little places on offer close by.

On arrival at the airport, how far is the hotel?

Its only about 50 mins in a taxi to our hotel. Before you come on holiday we will send you a more detailed itinerary.

I am travelling on my own – is this holiday suitable for me?

We have many single travellers on our walking holidays. The smaller groups, friendly guides and flexible nature of our holidays always work well. Lixouri, our base, is also a small, safe town where you can feel relaxed and at ease almost immediately you step off the plane.

How fit do I need to be?

You certainly do not have to be a mountain hiker but we do ask that you are reasonably fit. Remember you can always walk at your own pace – we are in no rush. Just call us for a chat if you are concerned about your level of fitness.

What if my other half doesn’t want to walk?

This does happen. No problem with us at all, we can suggest lots of other activities for them or just point out some great beaches.  Please speak to us at the office to discuss prices.
