Our Alpine Club
Summer in the French Alps is all about fresh air, sunshine and activities. Staying at our traditional alpine chalet feels more like visiting friends than being in a hotel – with home-cooked food, friendly hosts and a relaxed atmosphere..
Gentle rambles from the chalet to the waterfall or epic alpine stomps above 2500m, there’s something for everyone. For those who love a challenge, try cycling some of the world’s most famous cols or hit the local bike parks and mountain bike trails. Adrenaline junkies can give white-water rafting or via ferrata a go, while kids will love the treetop adventure park, archery, swimming, ice skating and more.
And the best part? Not every day has to be full throttle. Some afternoons are best spent in the chalet garden, sharing a slice of cake and a cup of tea with a friendly game of ping pong as the sun sets behind the peaks.
Vaujany, Alpe D’Heuz
We LOVE Vaujany, with 300 days of sunshine per year, it’s a paradise for walking, biking and multi-activity holidays in the French Alps. In the summer months Vaujany is a vibrant little alpine town with locals going about their business, beautiful meadow flowers, fresh mountain air, fabulous mountain restaurants, shops and bars. No queues, just epic views.

Kids Club
Here’s your chance to stomp up the epic “refuge de la Fare” ascent, blitz the infamous Alpe d’Huez road bike climb or just ease into a lazy morning on the square with a cafe creme and croissant – without the kids.
We include 2 sessions throughout the week (morning or afternoon) at the children’s active clubs in Vaujany. The daily activities vary depending on group numbers, weather and other factors. It’s not compulsory and extra sessions can also be booked on arrival for a supplement paid locally.
La Garderie – a creche for ages 6 months to 4 years old.
Marmottons – ages 3 to 6 years old (split into 2 groups depending on age).
Les Chamois – ages 6 to 7 1/2 years old.
Les Randonneurs – ages 6 to 11 years old.
Les Alpis – ages 12 to 16 years old.
They are great clubs with professionally accompanied activities. The clubs are open Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 12:00 and from 14:00 to 18:00 and often provide a picnic if booked for the whole day.
Example Activities
- Watersports at nearby lake
- Archery
- Climbing
- Guided Hikes
- Swimming Pool
- Painting
- Boules
- Mountain Biking
- Horse riding (not always available)
- Bowling
- Tree Houses
- Orienteering

The clubs aim to take full advantage of the facilities Vaujany has to offer; nature, the modern swimming and leisure centre, fantastic picnic spots and sometimes include a chance for older kids to experience a night out under the stars in a refuge.
During the week, the kids will experience a whole host of professionally accompanied, inclusive activities.
The guides are French (most English speaking) and operated by Vaujany town hall. Most of our families children join in from the chalet for 1 or 2 sessions, so there’s usually some familiar faces.
Our Chalet
Maison Rostaing – La Villette
Sleeps up to 24, in 10 bedrooms
The Chalet
It’s a beautiful traditional Alpine farmhouse, that has been lovingly converted and restored with as much of the original stone and wood as possible, reminding you of its roots. The two interconnecting chalets have a large private garden with a table tennis table, and a hot tub, perfect for groups and families wanting to play garden games and BBQ into the sunset. There is enough space in the dining room for up to 24 adults, so plenty of space when the sun goes down.

Our lovely chalet provides the perfect base for your alpine holiday; a stunning location close to everything and somewhere to relax and unwind. World famous cycling, walking and trail-running routes right on your doorstep, breath-taking waterfalls and scenery, an equal blend of activities for all and space and surroundings that inspire doing nothing at all, great food, local tipples as well as history and traditions a-plenty.
Location – La Villette
Only 1 km up the road from Vaujany, La Villette (1400m–3300m) is the hamlet of which rural French Alpine dreams are made. There’s a free shuttle service, every hour, to and from Vaujany also – Le Petit Train.
Our chalet is surrounded by gorgeous traditional mountain homes, where goats and chickens still inhabit cellars and lofts. Locals go about their traditional rural way of living as they have done for centuries and in the evenings a peace descends making your wood-fire lit lounge or summer garden, with hot tub, the perfect place to relax and really unwind.

Bedrooms are either standard twin, double, triple or attic rooms that sleep 4. Nearly all the bedrooms have an en-suite, however there are a few that don’t, but we always ensure families with 2 adjacent bedrooms (without en-suites) have their own bathroom so you don’t share with others.

The Location
Vaujany
Steeped in traditional Alpine history, Vaujany, part of Alpe D’Heuz, is recognised as an area of outstanding natural beauty with a friendly, long-established community.

Vaujany is so much more than a touristy, purpose-built alpine resort. It is one of the ultimate Alpine locations given its accessibility to a rapid 160 person cable car that whisks you up to 2062m in 4.10 minutes.

There are a few bars in the village for that after-activity tipple and charming little restaurants serving local and international cuisine. The network of hidden escalators weaving around the village makes it easy to get from place to place.

Why Choose Vaujany ?
Each year we welcome triathletes, mountain bike enthusiasts, budding Wiggins and Froomes, painters, mountain walkers, families and many more. They all come seeking thrills in the heart of the French Alps, they all leave with a piece of Vaujany in their hearts. It’s alpine paradise without the crowds.
Great mountain walks, mountain bike trails, beautiful lakes, swimming, climbing and fishing. You can walk up to the La Fare hut, ride down to Oz en Oisans, or walk over to the Chalet du Lac Besson for a tasty lunch! There is too much to do in a week !
Getting There
We are based in the resort of Vaujany which is found in the heart of the French Alps, Rhone-Isere region, located only one hour from Grenoble by car. We really recommend either driving out or taking the train. Both very carbon-friendly ways to travel, especially with family.
By car
The majority of our summer guests drive from the UK and you’ll benefit from a car when on holiday to take full advantage of the splendid French Alps setting, and you can bring along your favourite bikes and stop off for nearby groceries on the way.
Vaujany is an hour from Grenoble and only 570 miles from Calais (of which 535 miles is motorway). It is certainly doable in a day. However, why not enjoy the scenic drive on the way down? Reims, Dijon or Lyon make for interesting stop-offs if you prefer to break up the journey.
French motorways are usually free-flowing and relatively pleasant.
By train
Grenoble is a mere three hours by TGV from Paris – it couldn’t be easier! It makes for such a hassle free, quick way of arriving in the French Alps. There are plenty of car hire firms right by the train station in Grenoble and in just over an hour you can be in Vaujany alpine mountain resort and in your chalet! Check out Eurostar for the latest prices/availability.
By plane
The closest airports to Vaujany / Alpe d’Huez during the summer months are Lyon and Geneva. Both airports are serviced by British Airways, Easjet and other major airlines from the UK. Cars can easily be hired from both airports.
