Walking holidays in Kefalonia

A line of walking tourists explore a coastal trail in the sunshine

The sun is shining, which technically means it’s summer right? The most enthusiastic among us have started wearing their flip-flops and swimming shorts and we’re all getting excited about the summer holidays (so what if they’re still a few months away!).

Here in Greece, BeyondBeach is living up to its name and getting ready to embark on some fantastic walking holidays in Kefalonia and Evia.

When we’re not sailing the clear Ionian seas, we’re donning our walking boots and trekking the stunning island of Kefalonia ad Evia. And we welcome you to join us! Come and admire the beautiful coastal scenery, the romantic ruins and fresh green slopes on one of our unique walking holidays.

About Kefalonia

Kefalonia is north of Zakynthos (Zante), south of Lefkada and Corfu. The largest of the Ionian islands, Kefalonia offers a striking combination of wooded areas, mountainous landscape, beautiful beaches and azure coasts lined with spectacular caves. It is a wonderful place for trekking, whether you prefer to cruise the coast or hike the hills.

The island has an incredibly rich history. Visit sites from Homer’s epic poems, explore Venetian fortifications and insightful ancient ruins, saunter around picturesque fishing villages – whatever takes your fancy! In addition, Kefalonia is well known for appearing in the novel Captain Corelli’s Mandolin by the author Louis de Bernières – a film adaptation of which was made on the island in 2001.

Environmental considerations

Although some tourist developments have taken place on Kefalonia over the years, which has led to more people visiting the island, its large size means that there is plenty of space and areas of natural beauty that are well preserved.

The environment is clean and well maintained, with much more woodland than other islands in the Ionian region. Ancient olive trees, beautiful flowers and crops grow in abundance across the island and there is a diversity of Mediterranean wildlife to fascinate children and adults alike.

Conservationists such as Katelios and Wildlife Sense work tirelessly to protect Kefalonia’s marine and terrestrial wildlife – particularly the endangered loggerhead sea turtle which comes to the shores of Kefalonia to lay their eggs and utilise the warm weather and sand to incubate.

Join our walking holidays in Kefalonia

Having spent over a decade in Kefalonia, we are knowledgeable about the best places to go walking – that’s why we’ve created a walking itinerary that is completely unique to us. Our relaxed walking tours combine history, culture and epic scenery, but also allow plenty of time to enjoy some local cuisine, re-charge the batteries and do a bit of swimming.

Our routes are designed to make the most of the varied and dramatic Kefalonian landscape, and they convey the diversity of scenery the island has to offer. There will be plenty of time to explore places of interest, as well as to chill on the beach, converse over a tasty meal and an ice cold beer or glass of wine.

We generally take groups of around 8-12 on our walking holidays in Kefalonia, which we feel enables guests to socialise and ensures we do not leave a damaging imprint on the environment. Whether you are an individual, couple, group of friends or family, we welcome anyone to join in.

After a wonderful day trekking on our carefully thought out walking routes, retire to your hotel and relax in the warm evening sun, splash around in the pool, or if you’re still feeling adventurous, take the ten-minute stroll into the nearest town, Lixouri, where you can sample some of the local food and drinks and wander around the busy town square.
